Daily Mail vs The Guardian

Face of teenager cyber terrorist. It is implying that teenagers cannot be trusted online. The picture is of an unhappy boy, so the reader could imply that the teenage boy is unhappy and lives in a bad environment an they could that most teenagers are like that. They are unfair as it does not show how other teenagers are safe on the internet. The audience are mostly parents so they can be more aware of what their children are doing online. The negative words that are used is cyber terrorist.

The Daily mail has got a large picture in their front cover and a large headline to catch their readers attention the question makes the reader want to find out more on the subject. They have a xenophobic attitude to  migrants entering the country which there target audience could have as well. The guardian have more sympathy towards the situation and emphasises this by using a picture of a man crying. The guardians news is political and challenges the immigration system which contributes to their communistic views. They have different opinions as the daily mail do not want to let more migrants in whereas the daily mail does.

Both newspapers highlight different aspects of the Olympics where the guardian celebrates the athletes by using a large picture of an Olympic swimmer and has the headline No gold but plenty to cheer, they have a positive celebratory copy which would include facts about the Olympics. The daily mail reports about scandals and dramas of the Olympics as they highlight that the Olympics is hiring underage guards. The daily mail normally reports scandals and dramas as their target audience like to read those types of things.

News: The Political Landscape of Britain

The Conservative Party...( Right Wing)
This is the British Party of the right, including  broad range of traditional conservatives and royalists, neo-liberals and social conservatives. A majority of party members are in favour of a revision of the terms of Britain's membership of the EU, and the holding of a referendum on withdrawal. But other conservatives, including industrial and business leaders, are strongly pro-European. The Conservative Party is made up of local Associations which play a major role in the selection of candidates and the appointment of the party leader.

This newspapers support the conservative because Theresa May is telling us that “the leader of the Labour Party is an old-fashioned international socialist who has forged links with those quite ready to use terror when they haven’t got their way: the IRA, Hizbollah, Hamas. As a result he is completely unfit to govern and Britain would be less safe with him in No 10”.

UKIP (The UK Independence Party)
A sovereignist party that wants Britain to withdraw from the EU. The party has little in the way of policies, apart from Europe-bashing, but is surprisingly popular with voters disgruntled with the perceived failures of the main parties.

The Liberal Democrats...(Centre Party)
A party of the center, formed in 1988 by the merger of the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The party is the most pro-European of the major British parties, and until 2015 shared power with the Conservative Party in the coalition government. Many of those who voted Lib-Dem in 2010 were furious when the party chose to go into coalition with the Conservatives, and in the 2015 election, the Lib Dems lost most of their MPs. However, following the election of left-winger Jeremy Corbyn to the head of the Labour party in September 2015, and the subsequent internal divisions in the Labour party, support for the Lib-Dems has begun to rise again

The Labour Party...(Left Wing)
The Labour party covers virtually the whole spectrum of left wing politics in Britain, and includes a smaller party known as the Co-operative party.  The party is supported and funded by the British trade unions, but it is not controlled or significantly influenced by them, and this influence was further reduced in 2015. Very weak following the recession of the 1970s, the party was largely reformed later by Tony Blair, who transformed it into a modern social democratic party. The Labour Party is made up of local parties (Constituency Labour Parties), most British trade unions and other associations. These structures send delegates to party conferences, depending on the number of their members. Party Conferences define the general lines of party policy, but conference decisions are not binding on the parliamentary party .

This newspaper supports the Labour Party because there is a prediction that Labour will gain more votes, whereas the Conservatives will lose votes.

Analysis of TV Drama

How is the representation of gender constructed in the text?

Camera:
Bird eye view- an extreme high-angle shot. I think the director used this shot to make it look more enjoyable. Another reason is to show the audience where the TV drama was set and the time it was set. For example, we can see an office building and we can see two yellow taxis, which suggest that the show was set in New York City.

Establishing shot- a shot which establishes the setting for the scene. I think the director is trying to show the important figures and objects in the TV drama.

Crane shot- a shot created using a large camera mounting, capable of achieving high elevations and movements.

Tracking shot- a shot in which the camera moves to follow a sequence of action, placed usually on a dolly or specially prepared tracks. I think the director used this shot to show how busy the office was.

Sound:
Diegetic- sound which has a source on-screen. I think the director uses this sound, to build the scene. Also to show the different sounds that would be in an office.

Non-diegetic sound- sound which does not have a source on-screen.

Editing:
Shit-reverse-shot- when one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking "back" at the first character.

Cut- an abrupt transition from one shot to another.

Male Gaze Music Video Task

1. Are the videos empowering or degrading?
2. Are the women in control?
3. Are the videos aimed at women or men, or both?

Taylor Swift- Bad Blood
1. This video is empowering for women, because it is showing that women are strong and that they can do anything men can do.
2. The women in the video are in control, there is only one male in the video and the rest are strong fearless women. But others could say that the man in the video is the one in control, and the women are doing what he wants them to do.
3. This specific video is aimed for women, or it could be aimed at the man, to show others that you do not need a lot of men to control a lot of women.
They used tracking shot when Taylor was getting suited up by the Trinity.

Justin Timberlake-Tunnel Video
1. Degrading for women, because Justin is objectifying the women in the video. The facial expressions of the women are seductive in some sort of way.
2. All the woman in this video are being showed as objects. Justin looks like he is in power and he is enjoying it.
3. This specific video is aimed for men, as the woman are presented as objects who are dancing naked.
They used close ups to show Justin's eyes and mouth. They also used dissolve quite a few times.

Rihanna-Pour it up
1.Degrading for women, for most woman do not wanted to be presented in a sexual way. The facial expressions of these woman are invitational.
2.The women in the specific video are in control, because from other people's perspective it almost looks like the women are trying to sell sex and for some women enjoy being 'looked' at.
3. This specific video is aimed at men.
They used Mise-en-scene  when the women were dancing around the throne.

Jason Derulo - Swalla (feat. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign)

  • How does the singer look at the audience?
  • How does the audience look at the singer?
  • What is the audience looking at?
  • Is the representation (costume, make up etc) provocative in any way? If so how? Why is the representation provocative? Is it necessary?
  • Who has the most power - is it the singer or the audience or a bit of both?
The singer male singers in the video look as if they are in control of the women. It is as if the women are being told what they should do.

The audience look at the singer as if he is just the stereotypical man who controls women, and it is he's job to control them and tell them what they should do.

The audience are looking at women who are being controlled. Some may thing that the women enjoy what they are doing.

The costume that the women are wearing are provocative, because people might say that what they are wearing is inappropriate for others. Even though some women might admire the women in the video, others might not want to be portrayed in that way.

I think the singer is in control, but other people in the audience, for example, men might think they are in control in some way.
