Old Spice Advertising Revision

Old Spice's campaign tries to attract a younger audience by adding tiny cartoon figures, and the man is basically like the beach where the cartoon figures are on, doing different things, such as sunbathing and fishing.
The way that the man is looking into the camera, suggests that he is trying to show that the anti-antiperspirant itself attracts younger people.
It looks like the some of the cartoon figures are being mischievous, for example on the mans ear there is a cartoon figure who has caught a shark, and there's another figure who is hanging from the sail on the boat. This is a good way to attract a younger audience, as younger people are usually mischievous. The poster uses tropical things such as palm trees, and tropical colours such as clear blue.

The Big Issue Revision

Location- the location is in London, we know this because we can see Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster in the background. Also we can see some of the River Thames as well.
Costume- the costume is the original Paddington costume, which is a blue coat and red hat. The colours blend together with the snow, because it makes it look like that England is a welcoming place.
Props- the props that are used are the suitcase that Paddington carries around and the train ticket.
Lighting- the lighting is very clear, as we can see every detail in the magazine. We can see that it is night time, because of the street lamp that is shining bright and the little fairy lights attached to it.
Choice of camera shot/angle- the camera angle that is used is a low angle, it almost looks like an eye level angle. But the way Paddington is waving and looking down shows that it is a low angle.
Typography- the font that is used is very bold, the way the magazine chose the phrase 'One of Us' suggests that the magazine is trying to make a statement. We can see that the dots on the 'i's are bear paws, which symbolise Paddington's paws. The colour of the font is very golden, it might symbolise being rich. Also the gold colour blends in well with the blue coat.
Address of written content to the audience- the phrase 'One of Us' might make the audience question the magazine, but then when they read 'Migrant British Icon', they will then know that the magazine is trying to tell the reader that they are part of the Big Issue society and that a migrant is going to be part of the society as well. The Big Issue are trying to suggest that immigration is a positive and I think they show that with the gold writing. The magazine uses intertextual reference, they do this by talking about migration and immigration, and by adding Paddington the Bear.

Dance Music

Most dance music has an electronic beat in it and they usually have dancing in the videos. Also they are also in the dance music top charts, which makes it easier to spot which ones are dance music. The videos have fast cut shots that are in time with the dance beat, this then sustains audience interest and prevents boredom. They have close up shots of people to show the individual roles of the people in the video. also there are fast shots that add the sense of realism that there would be in a dance environment. There are a range of mid-shots of people dancing in time with the beat to further contribute to the sense of realism. Everyone in each video look happy and they look like they are enjoying themselves, which is what dance music tries to portray. The people in the videos make the atmosphere live, to add further realism for the audience, they have either filmed the videos with a group of people where we can see that they are all having a good time. There is slow motion editing used to contrast with the fast edited shots in the videos, this allows the audience to focus on certain aspects purposely designed to be focused on.

The rise of disco in the early 1970's led to dance music becoming popular with the public. By the 1970's, electronic dance music started to develop.

Media Footage Evaluation

Media Footage...

In this scene, the location was supposed to be shot outside at night, but I think due to the camera that was used it could not take videos in the dark, so the scene was taken inside.

In our footage, our locations were very different to the original footage. For example, in the 'wear a hat indoors' scene, we shot the scene in a class room. So there are posters on the walls, bags and coats on the table. So the first thing the audience will see when they watch the ad is the posters because of the colours. Whereas, in the original footage, they shot the scene in a restaurant, where there is the right type of props that are needed in a restaurant. But in out footage, we can see it as a good thing by using a classroom to film our scene, because usually in classrooms you are not allowed to wear hats indoors. In order to make this scene better, we can change the clothes that the models are wearing, we can also change the location to make it look more similar to the original footage.

In the 'wear a skirt if your a boy' scene, the lighting was very off, due to the location and the camera that was used. The model was wearing a skirt, but the audience might not know that he is wearing a skirt, as we cannot see his legs, whereas in the original footage we can see his knees. Due to the lighting, the models black top blends in with the purple skirt, which makes it look like he is wearing a dress instead of a skirt. Also the writing on the paper is no clear, because it was written with a neon pink highlighter and most people will not be able to read it. The lining at the top of the frame looks like the camera is being held in a slanted angle, make on side higher than the other.  In order to make this scene better, we can change the models top to a brighter colour, and we can make sure that the skirt is scene. We can also change the location because of the lighting.

In the 'dress like a girl' scene, we could have made it clear that we were trying to show the studio, instead it just looks like we did not have another location to shoot the scene, so we just decided to do it in the studio. Also, the audience will not be able to see that the model is wearing a dress, due to the camera being so close, as it just looks like he is wearing a butcher's apron instead of a dress. In order to make this scene better we can make the lights brighter to make it look like the model is there for a photo shoot.

In the 'mix pink and red' scene, the pink shirt sort of blends in the snow, also we can see the trees and the wooden gate, which will distract the audience. In order for us to make the scene better, we can crop the snow off, but then the models feet will not be in the frame. Another thing that we can do it crop the wooden gate so that only the wall is seen.

In the 'don't try at all' scene, the main focus should be the model, but the audience will be distracted because of his trainers, which blend in with the walls. Also the audience will be distracted because of the different types of posters and the colour of the wall. Also, due to the yellow the walls, the camera makes the room look really bright. In order for us to make the scene better, we can use another room that does not have a lot of lighting, or any bright colours. Especially a room that does not have posters so that people do not get distracted when watching the ad.

In the 'stand out, blend in' scene, the main focus is to stand out, then blend in, but when the model is supposed to stand out, the audience cannot really see why he is standing out, even though he is wearing a sambro hat. The audience might think that the focus of the scene is because of his jacket. Also the camera in in this scene was shaking and it does not make the shot look professional. In order for us to make the scene better we could've used another location with clear background, or somewhere where there are no leaves on the ground.

In the train scene, the 'wear a skirt if you're over 40' scene and 'try too hard' scene, we used the footage from the original video. This is a negative point, because we used footage that we did not take ourselves. Also it is not good organisation skills, as we all had job roles and we decided who was going to do what.
As a group I personally think we were organised, because we all knew what we were doing. If we had to bring any costumes or props in, we all knew when we were supposed to bring them in. There were a few times when we were not organised, for example, when we were first planning, we decided that we were going to cast models externally but then we did not have the time to get any models, so we decided to model ourselves, but then we had one or two models who we casted externally. Towards the end of filming, we were not organised, as we all decided what scenes we were going to do, but we ended up adding some footage from the original video. This is a negative point as we did not take the video ourselves. The elements of organisation that were vital to our group, was making sure everyone in the group had a part to play. Some people in the group did more things, for example, the director and the producer.

Evaluate my Initial Footage

Framing- The difference between these two shots is that in the original shot, the frame is showing the model's knees, whereas in our shot the model's knees are not in the frame. I think the professional shot is more successful, because they would have spent more time filming the shot, whereas we only did it one or two times.
Lighting- The lightning does not really work, as you cannot see the model's face properly. Also, the colours of the top and skirt are supposed to be seen, whereas on this shot they are blending in together. We did not try to do any special set up, we just decided to use the lighting that was in shot location. Due to the lights, we can see the reflecting of the classes in the background.
Mise en scene- The skirt choice was similar to the original shot, but we could have had the model wear a checked shirt to match the model in the original shot.
Camera- in our shots we used a hand-held camera. In our shot it looks like the shot was not filmed on an eye level, it almost looks like the model is looking down a bit.
Actors- the actor worked well while doing the shot.
